Urban Dreams

A city of wooden skyscrapers
centered around a square acre
of grass, benches skeletal
and precise near the men who sit
around chess boards
as elm leaves fall
sometimes in pairs,
while a woman
bare to the waist walks
past, the men stare, pawns
in mid-air until she reaches
the far side
and they resume
the ancient measurements
of squares and pieces.
